Although Mars is practically gone until 2005, it's a tough planet to observe, especially for beginners. However, does the Apex have a 2" focuser? If not, its FOV will be very small and will make finding DSOs via starhopping difficult.Īlso, if you have strong interests in Mars (as I do ), I would certainly not choose an 80mm for this task. I've looked through the Orion 127mm MCT (not Apex) and it seemed to give a fine view. I currently study Mars and have always had an interest in seeing it in "real time." ToddĪ grand is a nice figure to spend on the telescope indeed :money:!

The three scopes are the SkyQuest XT10 10" Dob, the Apex 127mm Mak and the Skyview Pro 80mm ED EQ refractor. Is there some scope out there for $1000 or less that I have missed that is the gold standard? If some of you had my money and were looking to buy your first telescope what would it be? What has the biggest bang for the buck? Lastly of the 3 I mentioned earlier does one of them stand out as the "better" telescope? Thanks for all of the help and the wonderful site. Now I have around $1000 to spend on a setup. The other problem is that I live in the burbs near Denver and if I need to haul the scope out to the hills the 10" is pretty darn big. The only concern I had is that right now I am not interested in astrophotography but I might want to get into it later.

The guys at work told me I should get the Dob for my first scope and that is the direction I am headed. I currently study Mars and have always had an interest in seeing it in "real time." I guess that planets would be first on my list but I don't want to be limited to just them.
